Yorkshire Terrier training can be a fun and challenging experience for the terrier owner. While Yorkshire Terriers are smart and quick to learn, they also have mind of their own so have patience, be firm and be consistent.
When training your Yorkshire terrier, try to minimize distractions. Remove other animals and people from the area and focus on one command at a time. Speak in a clear and concise voice and be consistent. The owner will want to sound authoritarian but should not yell in anger at the dog during training or cause physical pain.
Use treats when training your terrier. Show your dog the treat but and then give the command. Do not give your dog the treat until it completes the task successfully. The terrier will start to equate its successful completion of the task with a positive result. Soon you won’t have to use a treat, as your dog will accept praise in lieu of food for completing the task.

Potty Training
When potty training your terrier, there are different methods you may use but treats and frequent praise can be used in conjunction with any method you may choose.
Newspaper and puppy pads are very common tools in toilet training terriers. Use the paper or pads in an area of the home where it is safe for the dog to eliminate. Non-carpeted areas of the house are recommended and any items that may be harmful to your dog should be removed.
Once the puppy has become accustomed to using the paper to eliminate on, start taking your terrier outside when it shows signs that it needs to relive itself. Place some soiled paper or pads in the area of the yard, which you have chosen for toilet training. Start moving the papers and pads closer to the door to which the dog will use to exit the house to eliminate. Eventually the papers will be moved outside and then no longer needed as the dog will learn to vocalize it’s need to go outside. As with all Yorkshire terrier training, treats and lots of praise are required and remember not to scold your terrier when it makes a mess indoors.
Crating
Crating is another popular method to toilet train your puppy once your terrier has reached at least 9 weeks of age. Choose a kennel that allows the dog to stand up and turn completely around. Place clean bedding inside and use treats and games of hide and seek to coax your terrier inside the crate. Never force your dog into the crate or raise your voice.
Don’t close and latch the crate until your terrier is comfortable using the kennel. Start by getting your terrier to use the crate for short periods and then start increasing the amount of time your terrier spends in the crate. When used as a bed, the dog will learn not to eliminate in the crate as your terrier will naturally be disinclined to soil it’s bedding. However, accidents do happen and the dog should not be berated. Clean the bedding and use a non-toxic cleanser to remove the scent. The dog will soon learn to vocalize its need to relieve itself.
As a reminder, Yorkshire Terrier Training is not difficult but requires patience, consistency and firm but loving owner.
