vizsla trainingThe Vizsla is an ancient and regal breed, but Vizsla training is an easy prospect for their owner as their personality belies their aristocratic past and importance in Hungarian history.

Breed Background

The Vizsla is a mid sized dog that has been breed as a hunting dog. It is a high-energy dog that requires plenty of exercise but makes and excellent family for both adults and children.
The Vizsla is a loving dog that will not respond well to negative reinforcement so remember not to yell at your Vizsla during training. Instead, use only positive reinforcement in the form of praise and treats. They will also generally respond well to clicker training.

Temperament

The Vizsla is energetic breed so make remove all distractions including other pets as you begin the training process. When training, introduce one command at a time to eliminate confusion. Learning its name is mission number one and that can begin the moment the dog is brought home. The next command trained should be a return command such as “here” or “return”. When the dog can successfully complete the task, praise the dog and give and edible treat. Treats can be replaced with only praise once the dog is familiar with the command. The Vizsla will be a quick learner and you will find that the dog can continue to learn throughout its long life.

House Training

House breaking the dog, for many will be the most important part of Vizsla training. There are two popular methods to be introduced: crate training and paper training. The way you choose to potty train your pup is certainly up to you, but keep in mind that with crate training, size is everything. Your pooch should be able to stand and turn around in the crate, but not much else. If they are given too much room, they are much more likely to soil the crate.

Exercise

As gun dogs, Vizsla require high levels or exercise daily. They also need to be engaged and challenged mentally as well. Games and doggy puzzles are great for this breed.

Bonding

Vizsla often become intensely bonded with their owners and prefer to sleep in bed with their family. Is it certainly up to you whether or not you allow your pooch to sleep in your bed, but realize that, if you allow it while they’re still young, they will expect to be able to do it when they are older as well.
Due to their strong bonds with you, they may experience separation anxiety whenever you’re away from home. There are several basic training things you can do in order to help prevent or stop separation anxiety and the accompanying behavioral issues.

  • Establish yourself as the Alpha Dog
  • Use commands and/or clicker training to reinforce your position
  • Change up your schedule whenever possible (so that your pooch won’t worry about you being gone for long periods of time every time you go outside)
  • Challenge your Vizsla with sports and other training
  • Remain calm whenever you leave or return home. Your pup will take cures from your body language and tone of voice

Vizslas love to be challenged so your Vizsla training will be fun, entertaining, and a fairly quick experience for both dog and owner.
