If your new puppy will be kept in the house as most are, first find a suitable place in the house for the puppy to relieve itself. Very often, the bathroom or a small area of the kitchen is used after removing any items that may harm the dog that the dog can harm.

Many new owners use newspaper or puppy pads to line the acceptable area. Your puppy will soon get used to using the paper or puppy pads and stop using other areas of the house to relive itself. Puppies will make mistakes however and as the owner, you should not be overly critical or hit the dog. A firm “no” is all that is needed. You don’t want the puppy to equate you as the owner with pain.

For those owners who have an area outside of their home for the dogs to use, start taking the puppy out to that area for periods of no more than a half and hour at a time. Do not praise the puppy when it is looking for scent and a place to relieve itself however it the puppy does relive itself, then you should praise the puppy.  If the puppy doesn’t relieve itself, take it back to the house and monitor.

For those using paper or pads to house train the dog, take the used newspapers or puppy pads to that area so the puppy can smell its scent. Some find it helpful as well to start moving the papers or puppy pads closer and closer to the door until finally the paper is moved outside.

To toilet train a puppy while using the crating method; ensure that you have purchased the correct equipment. This would include a crate of the proper size. The dog should be able to stand erect and turn completely around in comfort. Also supply comfortable, clean bedding and an apparatus to supply the puppy with water while in the crate.

A crate shouldn’t be used until the puppy is at least 9 weeks of age and the time spent in the crate should be limited at first and then lengthened, as the puppy grows older. At first, do not close and latch the door but use edible treats and games of hide and seek with those treats to entice the dog into the crate. Never force the puppy into the crate or scold the puppy during the crate training process.

Dogs have a natural inclination not to soil their sleeping area so the crate should be used as a bed for the puppy. When old enough, you may begin shutting and latching the crate door for short periods of time. When you open the door, take your dog to the selected area of the house or yard to relive itself. Don’t’ forget to praise the puppy when it uses the chosen area to potty.

Use these suggestions to toilet train a puppy and the experience should be a low stress, and happy experience for both you and your puppy.
