Golden Retriever TrainingGolden Retriever training must address several ironies of this playful Scottish wonder. Whilst they make brilliant household pets when they are older, your Golden Retriever training will be put to the test while they are still puppies.

For such a large dog, they have an exceptionally soft-gripping mouth.

While remembering that these beautiful golden monuments are man’s best friend, they were bred to retrieve downed waterfowl and game birds shot by hunters.

Golden Retriever Training For Breed Specific Issues

There are three distinct variations of a Golden Retriever which all require specific training. The American, British, and Canadian breeds, all possess mildly different mannerisms and traits. For you to develop an accurate Golden Retriever obedience training system, place of origin does play a factor. Additionally, the pedigree of your Golden Retriever will also govern how strong its traits are.

Golden Retrievers are equally happy to be with owners and strangers alike. In certain respects, an effective training regime must counteract this lack of loyalty. Puppies will be notoriously disloyal, and specific care must be taken at all levels of training to ensure respect and loyalty to the owner. The usual reward treats, combined with regular feeding times, will win this gentle giant over.

In respect to their health, your  Retriever training must include regular veterinary checkups. Cancer, in addition to hip and elbow dysplasia (dislocation) are quite common in the Golden Retriever genetic makeup. While not directly part of Golden Retriever obedience training, strict attention must be focused on the diet, and vitamin supplements, as well as veterinary advice to minimize these health risks.

Using Golden Retriever Training To Bring Out Their Best

The hallmark of your dog’s training, will be to bring out their kind, friendly, and confident nature. This trusting, gentle disposition, means that they make very poor guard dogs. On the flip side, they make brilliant family pets, gently playing with young children. These intensely intelligent creatures eventually perceive the household family as their family, and any good Golden Retriever training would direct attention to ensuring that the dog feels completely integrated into the family unit.

Socializing during training, exposing your crazy little bundle of joy to the outside world, will result in a much more alert and streetwise individual. Whilst highly intelligent, Retrievers notoriously lack the ability to distinguish between friend and foe. Socialization should take place between weeks 10 and week 16, mingling with a vast variety of other puppies, large dogs, and any other animals that you wish it not to attack. Whilst it does not attack per se, Golden Retrievers still have an inbred instinct to chase birds while they are stationary on the ground.

Golden Retriever Training Recommendations

Golden Retrievers are not born wonder dogs. They need time, effort, training, and lots of praise in order to blossom into the great dogs they can be. You will need a good sense of humor and a keen willingness to let the house get a bit messy. The best place to get your Golden Retriever, with a pleasant disposition, is directly from a registered breeder. I would not recommend getting a dog from the pet store.
