History

While the Golden Retriever was originally bred as a hunting dog, it is a very good family pet. The breed is intelligent, fun loving, patient and quick to learn. This breed is patient with children, loving and loyal to its’ owners and also friendly to strangers. Their general lack of aggression and love of people does not make them a good choice as a guard dog.

The Basics

Training should be comparatively easy compared to some other breeds, as this breed is intelligent and eager to please. However, it will still take time and patience.

Using positive reinforcement methods only, take your puppy to a place in which you have removed most distractions. Train your dog on only one command at a time to reduce confusion. Briefly show the puppy an edible treat and vocalize the command in a clear voice. You will have to repeat this command and assist the dog in what it is supposed to do when it hears the command. When the dog completes the task successfully, give praise and an edible treat. Edible treats will no longer be necessary once the dog can regularly complete the task asked of it.

Temperament

The personality of Golden Retrievers is really a highlight of this breed and can be summed up as kind, confident, and friendly and confident. Far from being “single person dogs,” they are typically just as friendly with and comfortable around both their family and strangers. Because they are so trusting and gentle, they typically do not make good guard dogs.  Typically, Golden Retrievers are intelligent, calm, and extremely eager to please their masters, which makes them a real delight to train.

Exercise and Swimming

Most Golden Retrievers have high energy levels and will need lots of daily exercise.  They can also excel at dog agility, which is great for challenging them both physically and mentally.  Because they have been bred as hunting dog specifically able to retrieve birds from water, they are generally great swimmers.  Unlike some other breeds, Goldens generally love the water and are well suited for not only swimming but boating as well.

Obedience and Intelligence

Golden Retrievers are noteworthy because of their high intelligence, and they rank fourth on Stanley Coren’s “The Intelligence of Dogs” list, behind Border Collies, Poodles, and German Shepherds.  They are one of the top rated dogs when it comes to obedience and trainability. When it comes to Golden Retriever Puppy training, obedience training should be very easy compared to other breeds.

Goldens and Children

Goldens are also well-known for their patience with and tolerance of children and therefore make great family companion dogs.  They will also generally tolerate other dogs and animals in the household, but they should be socialized while they are still puppies if possible to minimize their hunting instinct.
