German Shepherd puppy training can be a fun and stress free experience if the owner is patient, prepared, consistent and educated.
German Shepherds are extremely smart animals and will learn quickly. Shepherds however are also strong-minded individuals who will try to be the boss if given the chance. For this reason, the owner should always be firm during the training process.
When training you puppy, try to remove all distractions. This would include other pets and people. Start your training with edible treats. Show your puppy the treat and in a clear, concise voice, give the command. When the puppy has shown it understands the command and completes the command, give it a treat and verbal praise as well. One of the first commands that should be taught is “here”, or “come” to teach the dog to return to it’s owner. Never scold the dog during training or cause physical pain.

German Shepherd puppy training should always include potty training.
There are two methods of potty training we are going to introduce. The first is crate training and the second is paper training.
Crate training has become a very popular form of potty training puppies. When choosing a crate or kennel, it must be large enough for your dog to stand up and turn completely around in while crated. Choose a comfortable and easy to clean bedding to place inside and also a device from which your dog can drink from.
- Do not force your puppy into the crate. Use treats to entice your puppy into the crate and hide treats in its bedding, creating a fun game of hide and seek for your dog. When your puppy is getting used to its crate, do not close the door. Once the puppy has become used to the crate and enters on it’s own, then start closing the door for short periods of time and continue to extend that time period.
- Dogs are inclined not to soil their bedding so your puppy will learn to vocalize their desire to be let out to relive themselves. Before they learn to vocalize that need, make sure to take your puppy out to eliminate during those times of day which your puppy normally relieves itself or when you see signs in behavior which indicates a need to eliminate. Remember, there will be accidents. Do not scold the dog but clean the crate with a non-toxic, odor neutralizing cleaner.
- Paper training using newspaper or puppy pads is another popular training method. Place papers in an area of the house where all items that may be harmful to the dog have been removed. At the time, which the puppy is, being paper-trained, also start taking the puppy out to the yard for half hour periods during the times the dog normally has to relieve itself. Place some soiled paper in the yard to introduce its scent as well.
- When the puppy is using the papers on a regular basis to eliminate, start moving the papers closer to the door that you will use to take the puppy outside to eliminate. Soon the papers will disappear, as your dog will be asking to go outside to eliminate.
Following these guidelines should make your German Shepherd Puppy Training a stress free experience for you and your dog.
