Dogs are adorable creatures but unfortunately their odor isn’t as adorable at all. Sometimes your dog can smell really bad because it likes to eat waste, roll around in the mud like a pig or rummage through the garbage dump. However even if you make sure that your dog does not get into any of those activities, it would still smell the same and the dog odor wold linger in your house and on your furniture. The good news is that it is not necessary to put up and live with the nasty odor in your house and you can always get rid of it courtesy of some effective techniques.

Keep your dog clean – When it comes to the task of removing dog odor, the first step that you should take in this regard would be to clean your dog regularly. Dogs that aren’t cleaned regularly are more likely to smell bad. So take the time out to wash your furry friend and you will find that this would not only remove dog odor but also make your house smell fresh and clean. You do not have to force your dog to take a bath every day as it isn’t healthy for them but bathing them just once every month will make a phenomenal difference to the smell or rather the lack of it.

It also helps to keep the sleeping area or the dog’s bed clean and if possible do not allow your four-legged friend to sleep on your bed or furniture. Purchase a dog crate and have your dog sleep there so that it would be easier to clean it and to remove dog odor. You can clean the bed once a week or once in two weeks if you do not have time on your hands but it must definitely feature on your list of cleaning chores.

During winter or cold months, you may not have to clean your dog that often and this is because like humans, dogs too do not smell as much in winter so there would not be any dog odor. Hence you can reduce the number of baths you subject your dog to. In case the dog odor still lingers strongly then you need to consult a veterinarian because your dog might be suffering from some sort of a health problem.

Have your house cleaned – Removing dog odor can be possible if you clean the dog as well as the house. If the odor smells like urine then you need to get your carpets cleaned thoroughly because the dog might have relieved itself on your carpet. In case of a small mess, you can use a spot cleaning product known as Nature’s Miracle which is a carpet cleaner that is bereft of any chemicals. Therefore you can feel free to use it so that when your dog attends Nature’s call, you are aptly prepared to clean the spot.

In case the whole house reeks of the smell then you should rent a professional steam carpet cleaner from a local laundry at affordable rates and clean it yourself or have some experts accomplish the task for you.

Do you hate the smell of wet dogs? When it comes to removing dog odor it is also necessary to deep clean all the furniture, not just the topmost surface like under the couches and cushions and make sure everything is spotless. Another thing that can come in handy is an odor remover or an air freshener. Products such as Febreeze and special sprays for removing pet odor are good choices for removing dog odor from carpets and furniture. Additionally you can also use a wall plug-in unit which you need to refill once a month.

However no matter how much you clean your house and the dog, if the odor has been brought in external sources, it is easy to rid of. On the contrary if the dog odor emanated from within the house, then disciplining the pet should take a priority as lack of it would render every measure futile.

Training dogs pertaining to how to behave with food served on tables or on counters is a necessity. Imagine a situation – you have served the food on the table for a meal, suddenly for some urgent reason you need to leave the room. Once you are back thinking that you may now finish your meal, to your surprise the plate is empty. Well, it is very common in homes having pets especially dogs. He has taken this opportunity to have an additional meal and relished on the food.

Since it is natural for a dog to gobble every edible thing in sight, the onus is on the pet owners to lay down the rules not just to maintain discipline in the house but also to ensure the pet’s good health.

Restrict his movement

Always keep in mind that extra meal is harmful towards the health of the dog. First and foremost thing that must be made clear to your dog is that he is not supposed to eat from the table top or kitchen counter. One thing that you too should refrain from doing is not to offer food from such places as it would only serve to confuse him even more.

The next step that can be followed is to set boundaries for his movement instead of giving him access to every corner and room of the house. If you show him his eatable but stop him from eating it, it will confuse the dog even more, so it is better to restrict his movement within the house and set some boundaries. Show him areas that he can freely move and the rooms where he doesn’t have any access to.

Experts always suggest not letting the dog have access to the kitchen of the house. There is actually no reason as to why this pet animal needs to be moving around in the kitchen which happens to a crowded place anyways where some activity always takes place be it cooking or cleaning.

Ways to stop the dog from jumping on table and counters

There is no need to punish the dog for doing unacceptable things as punishment never works. Rather it is better to make him learn what might happen if he fails to listen to you. Make him experience something that is unpleasant for him. Discussed below are some of the tips -

- First, try to keep the food out of reach, and teach the dog the consequences that he might have to face if he tries to jump on the table or counter to get hold of the food. You can also place some items like empty cans, coins, bottles etc in such a position that if the dog jumps to have access to the food these items would fall scaring him with the clatter.

- This technique of scaring will send the signal that if he tries to jump on the table or the counter to get hold of the food he will be greeted with a loud noise which is unacceptable to his owner as well as to himself.

Maintain your leadership role

Dogs always listen to people whom they identify as the leader. Thus if you are able to maintain your leadership and authority in the home it will not be a problem to stop the dog from jumping on tables and counters to gain access to the food.

Many households have the habit of leaving leftovers on the table and order the dog to clean up by eating them. This is absolutely a wrong attitude as it simply confuses the dog and results in other members of the household starving when he binges on food left uncovered and unattended.

If still you have too many angry members in the household complaining of foods vanishing from plates, there is just a simple way out. Stop your dog form entering the room where there is food.

Training a ChihuahuaChihuahua, although small and cute, is an aggressive dog breed which is a common in United States. Due to its small size and endearing looks pet owners often tend to overlook the training aspect of this dog only to realize its importance at later stages. On the contrary, this dog can be extremely obstinate at times of training and can cause much trouble too. To avoid such situations it is advisable to begin training the Chihuahua from a very early age.

Need for training

Meant as a small companion dog, Chihuahua is convenient to be carried at the hip wherever the owner goes. This breed of dog is comfortable being treated this way and simply likes to spend maximum time with the owner. For this reason training the dog to learn to socialize and avoid dominating behaviors is a necessary.

Good and proper training can control the stubborn and dominating behavior of the dog like falling into fits of barks in response to outside noises, be extremely reserved in their behavior towards strangers, respond aggressively towards other dogs, be unfriendly towards children and so on. Such attitudes often make them behave and act like big dogs and ultimately land them in trouble.

Getting Your Chihuahua to fall in Line

Taking control of the household is the first priority while commencing training. Since the dog has a very dominating attitude, in most of the cases this cute dog will try its best to usurp the right of its owner and take charge of his home doing as it pleases. Thus maintaining boundaries and setting limits for this dog is a must and discussed below are some of the tips to achieve success while training a Chihuahua -

When to feed – Feeding time of a Chihuahua should not be determined by the dog, but by the pet owner – this breed of dog has the tendency to fix the feeding time as per his mood and this nature must be strictly controlled by the owner.

Taking him for a walk – Taking your dog for a walk twice a day with good control over the leash is a good way to give him a bit of physical exercise. He must never be allowed to control or move wherever it pleases him. Keeping the control of the leash and letting the dog follow is important.

Cultivating an idea of space – Being small in size, movement in the house is easy for this dog. However it is important to let him know which furniture he has access to and can jump around on. The owner must learn to impose restriction on his movement and strictly adhere to it without responding to his barks and whines.

Paying attention – Chihuahua loves attention and prefers to travel and thus always gets into fits of barks and whines to draw the attention of the owner. However it is advisable to pay attention to the Chihuahua only when it maintains his relaxed and calm state. You must learn to ignore the cute member of the house while leaving the house or even while entering.

In order to live with and communicate with your dog one needs have a certain degree of control over the pet.

Mental exercise

We often ignore the fact that while giving the dog a bit of physical exercise mental stimulation is equally necessary. Very few of us really take such small dogs outside and involve them in exercise but it is one of the best ways of training this breed of dog with short basic commands like sit and stay, speak, quiet, fetch, and many more.

The main principle to be followed and kept in mind while training a Chihuahua is to remain enthusiastic while training him and avoid situations that can let the animal challenge his owner’ authority and develop bad temperament.

If you are at a loss when it comes to handling a hyperactive child then you are probably one of those people who are yet to encounter a hyperactive pet. After having a spent a tired day at the office, many pet owners come home looking forward to de-stress through a relaxed evening only to be jumped at by a pet who is bursting at his seams with energy and excitement. Under the circumstances it is but natural to lose your temper but a better option would be to exercise self control and find other ways of redirecting this high energy level.

Like in case of children, in case of dogs also there is no definite explanation for justifying the gushing fountain of energy – in some cases it might be attributed to boredom while in others it continues to remain an inexplicable mystery. Irrespective of the reason, investigating the behavior and trying to understand its underlying cause is one of the moral duties which every pet owner must perform.

If the dog is bored

A pet’s needs are very much similar to a child’s needs and hence as children require attention, a pet also needs to be paid adequate attention. Most of the time, dogs spend their day lazing around the house with minimal physical activity and the consequence is that not only do they become overweight but get thoroughly bored as well.

Daily exercise is a viable solution and although the duration varies from one breed to another, a regular dosage is sufficient to cause a mental as well as physical stir. While working or herding breeds like malamutes and huskies require minimum three hours of running around in the open for stimulation, for smaller breeds just a fraction of that would suffice.

Hyperactive due to separation

Many dogs tend to become agitated at being left alone and as a result express the anxiety in form of over excitement when the owner is about to leave home or comes back in the evening. Usually this takes the form of being jumped at by the pet and owners tend to rely on the rewarding tactic to avoid this situation only to regret it later.

There are other ways of dealing with this problem, the most effective being to ignore the excitement completely and prevent them from jumping around. Given time and patience, the pet can also be taught to calm down so that it is able to overcome the separation anxiety and not react violently every time the owner departs or arrives. Training could commence with going out for short durations and coming back and then gradually stretching the length of time spent outside. Ensuring that the dog is comfortably settled in his cozy space with one of his favorite toys is another way of muting down the excitement.

How to calm an excited dog

Teaching a dog how to calm down is an intimidating task although not impossible. It does require a lot of work and patience and entails imparting training in the correct manner so that the objective is achieved. After having established yourself as the master, the next step of training involves teaching the dog to perform simple tricks like sitting, waiting, maintaining silence and so on.

This would undoubtedly stretch the dog’s patience beyond a limit but it would serve to quite them down as the animal would be more intent on concentrating on the command and hence waste less of his time jumping around. Consistent training for certain duration would soon show positive results in form of calm behavior of the dog.

Although this method works with most of the breeds, there are some who still refuse to calm down and tend to be vivacious in spite of all the training. When this happens, it is probably due to lack of attention and hence devoting some undivided attention solely to the pet is in order.

dog gamesMany of us fail to spend quality time with our dogs. One way to ensure that you spend some fruitful time with your dog is to engage your pet in playing simple games daily. Not only does it help one to get relaxed but playing games serves to keep the pets busy as well by giving them something to think and not get bored or anxious easily. It further helps to reduce the extra energy that these dogs possess.

An ideal choice would be the game of “search” or “fetch” which when played with a dog involves a lot of energy for the animal and hence can be extremely exhausting for them physically as well as mentally.

Choose the right game for your dog

Discussed below are some of the popular and effective ways to bond with your dog by playing games and enjoying the satisfaction of being a good owner -

While playing a game of hide and seek, the aim is to enable the dog find out his owner. To begin with one can hide in simple places and call out his name. Further, boost up the energy and tell them that they have been successful in their job by showing your excitement. Slowly one can make the game harder by hiding in more difficult places.

Hunting for treasure is a good way to make a dog’s brain work. Once can hide toys and order the dog to find them. For a change one may hide treats or within the toy itself and commence from within the home.

Response to tricks – One first has to teach the dog some tricks on the basis of commands. Make sure the dog understands such commands and is able to complete every one of them. It is necessary to give them a treat as a reward for completing each command correctly. Later once the dog is comfortable with such commands a simple round of “Simon Says” will let him perform and complete the series of tricks that was taught to him in the past.

As a game, fetch and catch is a wonderful source of activity and most of the time dogs love playing this game constantly with their owner. The point to remember here is that he must come to a stop when given the strong command of “stop playing” or when his owner hides the toy.

Dogs love to wrestle and this makes wrestling a suitable game for large dogs as long as one is able to have control over the pet’s behavior. If at any point of time the owner the feeling of the dog getting agitated or observes any change in his behavior, a strong recommendation would be to stop playing this game. It is important to set a boundary to avoid any untoward incident.

Tug of War is a game which wild and stray dogs are often found to play amongst themselves. To play this game with a dog it is advisable to use items solely made for this purpose and teach the dog to control his behavior and drop the item when ordered to do so. Such training is necessary to avoid any aggressive responses during the game.

Playing games daily with your dog is equally important as also is taking them out for a walk to get them tired. However if one wishes to bond with his pet playing games is a great way. It also helps to train the dog how to respond to specific situations.

All members of the house must be made aware of the rules to be followed while playing with the dog and must strictly adhere with them to maintain uniformity. The sole purpose is to have fun, bond with the pet and avoid bad behavior.

One must remember that by adhering to these rules while playing with a dog, both can have fun and the owner can experience the benefits of such game sessions at a later stage. Last but not the least a good consultant related to the health of the dog is needed to enable the pet to lead a normal, healthy and long life.

homemade dog-food recipesThe majority of people understand that there are many foods which a dog should not eat. You hopefully already know not to give your dog chocolate or toothpaste and you probably don’t intentionally allow them to rummage through the trash. However, there are in fact many other foods which may cause serious side effects, health conditions or even death if a dog eats them.

Several of the dangerous foods will also be bitter or otherwise bad tasting to your dog, which is nature’s way to protect animals and people from poisonous and otherwise harmful foods. Unfortunately, some dogs are not swayed by the unpleasant tastes and when it comes to certain food, such as chocolate, they will try even harder to get them.

The No-Nos

With the vast assortment of foods you should avoid giving your pooch, here are the basics that you should never give you pet:

  • Garlic or Onions – can cause blood damage and anemia due to the release of disulfides and sulfoxides
  • Baby Food – often baby good contains onion or garlic powder, which can also cause anemia and other blood related problems
  • Bones – Although your pooch may love them, you should never give them actual animal bones of any kind. Bones chip and may be swallowed which can lead to lacerations, obstructions, and even intestinal blockages.
  • Cat Food – All pet foods are not created equal. A cat’s diet (and therefore their food) is much higher in protein and fat than that of canines. This can cause the food to be difficult to digest for your dog, which can cause digestive problems.
  • Caffiene and Chocolate – Caffeine, Theophylline, and Theobromine are toxic to canine. They may cause nervousness or even heart failure.
  • Citrus Oil Extracts may induce vomiting
  • Fat Trimmings can cause pancreatitis
  • Raisins and Grapes contain a toxin which may cause kidney damage
  • Liver - in large quantities may cause Vitamin A toxicity as well as a weakening of the muscles and bones
  • Hops – may cause seizures, fever, panting, an increased heart rate and even death
  • Iron Vitamin Supplements – Unless directed to do so by your vet, do not give your dog vitamins containing iron. Iron poisoning can cause damage to various organs
  • Macademia Nuts may cause adverse reactions within the muscles, nervous system, and digestive system
  • Mold can cause vomiting and diarrhea as well as organ damage
  • Mushrooms – Some types of mushrooms are toxic and may cause shock, system failure and even death in some cases
  • Raw Eggs may cause Salmonella as well as hair and skin conditions due to the enzyme Avidin
  • Rhubarb, Tomato Plant Leaves, and Potato all contain oxalates which can cause digestive and urinary problems
  • Plums and Peaches have pits that your pet may choke on
  • Persimmons contain seeds that may result in enteritis or intestinal blockages
  • Raw Fish - can cause Thiamine deficiency which may result in seizures, a loss of appetite and even death
  • Salt may cause electrolyte imbalance and dehydration which can both cause problems with the nervous system
  • Xylitol can cause liver failure
  • Alcohol - Even “just a little bit” may cause organ damage, coma, or death

This list is just a quick report of the foods which have caused immediate and direct damage to a dog’s health and organs. Additionally, dogs that receive table scraps or are overfed are at a particularly high risk for weight and other health problems.

As the dog owner, it’s your obligation to ensure that your dog is well fed, but only given the foods that are good for them.

Remember, they are generally happy to eat whatever you give them but fatty, rich foods from the table may be even worse over time than the foods listed above.

Now that we have taken a look at the foods your dog shouldn’t eat, what foods SHOULD they eat?

I strongly recommend you get a copy of John Miller’s 245 homemade healthy dog food recipes

After many years of brand new advancements, John reveals to dog lovers everywhere the very best homemade dog food recipes to help your dog be as healthy as possible.

English Bulldogs are one of the oldest purebred dog breeds in modern culture. They have been strong symbol The United Kingdom since the 1500s and they are the official mascot of the United States Marine Corps. Many Marine Corp bases have their own English Bulldog mascot right on base. Thirty-nine American universities also use the Bulldog as their mascot.

English Bulldogs are known to be a bit bullheaded, and are certainly courageous and stoic. Consequently, Bulldog puppy training could be a laborious task if your puppy is particularly adventurous or stubborn. Learning the correct way to train a Bulldog puppy can help you avoid the common pitfalls and mistakes, however, and English Bulldogs can be a fantastic, loving and loyal pet.

Choosing an English Bulldog Puppy

Prior to your choosing a Bulldog puppy, it’s important to take into account just how many issues this breed may have. Bulldogs are susceptible to a variety of medical problems, beginning at birth with a high mortality rate. Opt for a puppy which is a minimum of two months old, warm and friendly, and never aggressive. Ensure it is healthy by taking it to a vet because there are a variety of puppy medical problems which a bulldog puppy could have. They are especially prone to health conditions involving their ears and nose.

Bulldog puppy training ought to begin when you bring the puppy home, as long as the puppy is old enough and was already properly socialized. If your puppy isn’t 10 weeks old or older, or if it hasn’t been properly socialized with other dogs and people, it’s very important to start with socialization before doing other puppy training.

Bulldog Puppy Training

When your puppy is old enough, begin training with standard potty training. Bulldogs may be particularly uncooperative when they are young, therefore it is strongly recommend that you use crate training and that you or someone else is home as much as you can be for the duration of house training. It may take a bit longer than with other breeds to complete the potty training process, but once they figure it out, a Bulldog is very cautious to not go potty anywhere they’re not supposed to.

Once you have taught them the fundamentals, begin establishing an environment in your home in which you are the obvious and distinct alpha dog. Train your bulldog puppy to stop biting or nipping by using toys and clearly make a whining sound (just as their litter mates or mother would) so they understand that biting hurts. Many trainers will tell you not to allow a puppy (and sometimes not even an older dog) to sit on the couch or other furniture as well. This also helps to establish you as the leader in the household.

Bulldog puppy training can transition into obedience training when they are approximately 3 to 6 months old. You will likely want to begin with basic commands such as “sit,” “no,” and “come,” or “come here.”

Spending the time to for proper puppy training right away can help prevent a variety of issues later on including negative behaviors such as biting and being aggressive. It also helps to keep your Bulldog safe as they will learn to be obedience and well-behaved through your Bulldog puppy training and later obedience training

aggressive behavior in dogsAggressive behavior in dogs may be caused by a variety of factors. It could be a result of a power struggle between the dog and another animal, or you and your dog. It could also be an issue which was not dealt with properly when the dog was a puppy such as being attacked by another dog or being physically abused. No matter what causes your pet’s aggressive behavior, you should deal with it as early as possible. The effects of aggressive behavior in dogs can be both frightening and dangerous if not taken care of properly.

The Cause of Aggressive Behavior in Dogs

Aggressive behavior may begin as early as 6 weeks old. This is an important time when puppies need to be socialized with other people, animals, and especially other dogs. They also need to be trained properly to prevent them from biting. This time of puppy socialization training generally lasts until your puppy is about fourteen weeks old, (although it can take longer with some breeds as needed).

Consequently, a puppy should never be removed from the litter prior to 2 months of age. Additionally, harsh training should never be used with a puppy that is between 8-10 weeks old. Ensure that your pet is treated carefully during that time. Striking, shouting or any other severe punishments at this early age can cause aggressive behavior in dogs when they are older.

Dog aggression may be cause by a number of other factors as well. Genetics and breeding are undoubtedly variables which may contribute to aggressive tendencies. Some dog breeds tend to be more aggressive than others, but there is not any one breed of dog that is always aggressive. Furthermore, dogs which have not been sprayed or neutered are more susceptible to aggressive traits.

Undoubtedly, however, the single most important element contributing to aggressive behavior in dogs is the dog’s environment. A dog which has inadequate living conditions, is punished severely, has not been socialized properly, or has been attacked or scared by another animal or dog is much more apt to be aggressive when it gets older.

Aggression can also start from your dog’s natural instinct to establish a pack leader. Biting, growling and other aggressive behaviors are sometimes caused by a dog trying to establish themself as the alpha dog (leader of the pack). You need to establish yourself as the alpha dog while your pooch is still a puppy and you should be careful to maintain that position through the dog’s younger years to help ensure that your pet doesn’t try to take charge of your household.

Stopping Aggressive Behavior in Dogs

Should your dog demonstrate aggressive behavior after they are approximately 1 year or more of age (after they’ve reached sexual maturity), and they are still exhibiting aggressiveness, you need to address the problem immediate. This is particularly the case if your dog has already been spayed or neutered.

  • Re-establish yourself as the alpha dog
  • Never reward your dog for their aggressive behavior
  • Train (or re-train) your pet to respond to your commands
  • Control their walking and feeding times

If your pet is aggressive as a defense mechanism, they may bite, bark, or demonstrate other aggressive problems due to fear. If this is the case with your pet, they were likely not socialized properly. Be sure to keep your pet away from other animals and small children. Then re-train your pet to stop dog aggression.

Aggressive behavior in dogs can be very frustrating, but it can be controlled. If your dog’s aggression advances to violent tendencies such as biting or attacking people or other animals, you may wish to consider taking them to a professional trainer in order to avoid future problems.

teach-your-dogThe most common problem dog owners have isn’t biting, barking, or other negative behaviors. The real problem is that the owners really don’t keep their pets challenged physically and mentally. Whenever your pooch gets bored, they maybe become destructive. And when your dog gets destructive, you’re more likely to get mad.

Luckily, more often than not, this cycle is preventable if you simply take some time to exercise your dog’s body and mind.  Listed below are several suggestions which can help you keep your pet active as well as happy, (while hopefully stop your dog from chewing on your shoes and everything else in sight).

Problem Solving Skills – Present your pet with a couple of little challenges to solve each day. You can put peanut butter inside a Kong toy, bury bones in your yard, or even put treats into stuffed animals specially designed for dogs. It doesn’t have to be anything super hard. Small puzzles are entertaining for your pet and good for their brain stimulation as well.

Test Their IQ – You will find a variety of different Dog IQ tests online. They are basically a series of tests which can help you understand how smart your dog is (or how smart they are not).  Honestly, the specific IQ result isn’t as important as the actual testing process. The test is full of great exercises for your brain. The tests additionally give you a great way to establish yourself as the alpha dog. They are also a wonderful way to bond with your pooch. The majority of dogs will perform well on these tests, but even for those pets who don’t, it’s still a great workout for their brains.

Dog Obedience Training – Simple obedience training is very stimulating and very successful in working your pet’s problem solving skills. It will require plenty of intellectual power to recognize and follow along with your instructions, as well as to do tricks.

Exercise and Agility Training - Basic exercise is great for the physical fitness of your pet but it is not always effective at working your four-legged friend’s brain. As pet owners, it’s our job to continuously challenge our dogs by giving them interesting tasks to do. Agility training is great for this (for certain breeds).

Work for it – Dogs should not be given anything for free. As animals, dogs enjoy working for specific things like food and attention. So the next time you feed your pet, provide them with water, or even just sit and pet them, first make them sit down, stay, lie down, shake or accomplish other tasks or tricks.

Doing their job – Just about every dog breed has been selectively bred throughout the years to accomplish a specific task. They enjoy being challenged to do that task and they enjoy thinking. To truly work your pet’s brain, put their selective breeding to the test. Have a hunting hound track, have a herding dog herd, have a guard dog guard, etc. This can satisfy their deep down need to work and it’s also a great way to work their brains.

Teach them new Tricks – Once your pet learns the basic commands such as “sit” and “stay,” they are no longer very mentally stimulating for your pooch. Teaching them advanced tricks however, is highly engaging. If your pet is especially intelligent, challenge them with new tricks regularly.

Your dog’s brain will begin to decline if it is not properly challenged and worked. A dog which is not properly challenged both physically and mentally may become bored, restless and destructive. The above methods for stimulating your pooch’s mental capacities will also entertain your pet and keep them happy and engaged. A happy, engaged dog will also keep you and your family happy.

And once your dog is in the practice of learning new things, you may even be able to teach them awesome tricks like climbing a ladder or fetching a newspaper.

dog toysAre you tired of your doggy chewing on your favorite shoes, your furniture and a variety of other objects they’re not supposed to? It is the perfect time to find dog toys your pet will absolutely love. Not sure where to begin? No problem! The good news is there are many other pet owners who’ve searched out the absolute best toys for dogs.

Motor-driven Toys and Balls – Virtually any ball, vehicle, or other gadget which runs around the floor can keep your dog busy for hours. You can find toys with sounds, flashing lights, and with tails or other items pulled around behind the motorized toy. The majority of dogs love these types of devices, although you should make sure any toys you give your pooch are pet safe and that they do not have any small parts your dog may swallow.

Frost Bite Frisbees – Despite how much your dog may love it, a typical Frisbee is really a bit unsafe for your four-legged friend. The plastic of a Frisbee can break and splinter in their mouths and be accidentally swallowed, causing serious digestive issues. Frost Bite Frisbees are flexible and will, at most, just puncture rather than splintering. They also work great in cold temperatures, so they will not break should you forget them outside.

Kong Toys – Designed for both pet entertainment and pet owner piece of mind, Kong toys help keep your pooch occupied for hours when you’re not at home. They’re great for pets who suffer from separation anxiety or who tend to be destructive while you’re gone. Kong makes several different toys, all of them extremely durable. The best one for keeping doggie entertained are the thick, rubber snowman-shaped dog toys which you can put treats into. If your pet seems to get bored with the standard Kong, try a squeaking Kong.

Tug Toys – there are a variety of tug toys for dogs available in the market. Some are low quality and should be avoided as they may be swallowed by your pet, causing serious health problems. Toss-a-Lot and Kong dog toys are durable and will last a long, long time. Some squeak, which a lot of dogs love.

Squirrel Dude – The newest in innovative little rubber chew toys, the Squirrel Dude, similar to the Kong, keeps your pet entertained. Unlike the Kong, these toys for dogs have a timer which pops out snacks from time to time while your dog plays with it. Great to keep your pooch mentally stimulated and out of trouble while you’re gone, these dog toys will certainly have your pet begging for the next treat.

Puzzle Toys – For smart dogs, puzzle toys are a great way to keep them out of mischief. A puzzle dog toy works your pet’s mental faculties as they try to get a treat out of the toy, or work through a series of puzzles or pulls one toy apart to get to another toy in the middle. One of the top smart dog toys in the market right now is the Leo.

Tuffies – As much as your dog may love them, the majority of stuffed animals are not safe for dogs. Most dogs will eventually rip open a stuffed animal and the stuffing is dangerous. Likewise, many stuffed animals and plushies have small buttons, plastic eyes, and other pieces which can break off and be accidentally swallowed by your furry friend. However, Tuffies are constructed specifically for dogs. They come in different levels which have ratings to match up with the different levels of destructiveness of dogs.

Nylabones – These types of rubber chew bones are incredibly popular when it comes to toys for dogs. They are able to endure even the most powerful jaws and they are even good to help keep your dog’s teeth clean. They may be frozen and you can add peanut butter to them in order to ensure that the nylabone holds your dog’s attention for hours.

Obviously the kinds of dog toys your pet enjoys depends a lot on the breed and temperament of dog you’ve got, as well as their degree of energy, their jaw strength, and whether or not they’re easily scared by flashing lights or motors. The majority of dogs will love virtually all of the toys for dogs on this list; however it’s also important that you use your personal judgment as well. No one knows what makes your dog happy as much as you do.

What Causes Dog Scratching?

There are several reasons your dog might start scratching obsessively. Before you stop dog scratching, you must first identify the main cause of the problem

  • Allergic Reaction — Food allergic reactions, flea allergies, dust and plant allergic reactions, and other allergies can all cause pores and skin problems that result in severe itchiness.
  • Infection — Infections could be caused by germs, yeast, or even a fungus.
  • Environmental — If your pooch comes into contact with a lot of water from going swimming, digging, or even playing outdoors, it can cause itching as well.
  • Neurological — This is an anxiety issue that may be caused by extreme chewing and licking. Often, this route cause is an insufficient amount of exercise or even mental stimulation and challenges. It can also be brought on by canine separation anxiety.
  • Parasitic organisms – Just about all parasites have the potential to cause itching. They may include gnats, mites, ticks, fleas and other insects. The majority of flea and ticks medications help stop unwanted parasitic organisms.
  • Dietary — A dog who does not receive the essential nutrients in their diet could have dry skin, which can result in damaged fur, sores, and eczema, all of which can be itchy.

As you can see, before you stop dog scratching, you must first identify the reason why the itching started in the first place.

Visiting a Veterinarian

To fully figure out why the itching it happening, visit your veterinarian and have your pet thoroughly examined. If it is from an infection, your pet may require some form of antibiotics, or antifungal cream to get rid of the itching. Allergic reactions are generally treated with antihistamines or as alternation in diet. Parasites may be treatable with flea shampoo and medications.

Coping with Neurological Scratching

When it comes to neurological issues, it may be difficult to stop dog scratching. For persistent, neurogenic itching, the very first thing you really need to do is determine why your dog might feel the need to obsessively scratch.

Make certain your dog gets enough physical exercise. Most of the time, your dog has acquired a neurotic tick to continuously lick or scratch itself out of boredom. In order to stop dog scratching due to boredom, you need to give them something else to do. Often walking your dog or otherwise giving them the opportunity for exercise is sufficient. If not, (and especially if you have a highly intelligent breed), you may also try agility training or dog sports, (such as Frisbee).

In case your dog continues to scratch, be sure you visit your veterinarian again in order to eliminate any other medical conditions. Sometimes, bacterial infections can develop unnoticed.

Ultimately, your goal as a pet owner is to first identify why your pet is scratching and then address the issue. More often than not, you can stop dog scratching pretty easily with the above techniques.

Tired of your pet bolting after every little thing that moves? It’s very important that you stop dog chasing for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the real threat to your pooch’s safety. That cat, squirrel, or car they’re chasing may guide your pet into situations that may be very dangerous for their health. Not just that, but if you do not stop your pet from chasing after things, it may be very hard to take a nice, relaxing walk with them. Therefore, rather than just keeping poor Fido tied up constantly, you need to learn how to stop dog chasing before it escalates into a major problem.

The Basic Training Techniques to Stop Dog Chasing

In case your dog has a severe chasing issue, the very first thing you should do is to try some simple retraining. Oftentimes, if the fascination is not too intense, the training may help to stop dog chasing altogether.

  • Leash – In cases where your pooch just loves to pull on the leash, it may take a little a bit more time to get them back on track. To begin, whenever they pull, make them sit down next to you. Wait until they are calm before continuing on your walk. Quickly, they will connect the sensation associated with pulling the leash along with negative consequence of stopping.
  • Alpha Leadership – To start with, make certain your dog knows that it should always have its attention centered on you. You’ll need to establish yourself in the leadership role with your pet in order to stop dog chasing in this way.
  • Diversion – In order to stop dog chasing, you can also use a toy in order to distract your dog whenever you sense they are about to chase something else. Many times, when your dog is about to run off and chase something, you are able to quickly shift their attention to the toy or another object they are fond of like a favorite chew toy. Throw it, (somewhere safe, like in your own yard), and they will run after that rather than chasing whatever it was they were initially interested in.
  • Aversion – For this technique, it helps to have a friend assist you. Have them run, jog, or ride by on the bicycle in order to prompt your dog’s need to chase. Then, in order to stop dog chasing, have your friend stop, firmly state “no” and squirt them with the water bottle. For many dogs, this will help them learn that getting the thing they’re chasing results in the negative experience of being sprayed with water.

What to Avoid

Many people tend to turn to severe measures in order to stop dog chasing such as chaining the dog, making them wear shock collars, or utilizing electric fencing. Although these methods may work, they are not recommended. They are inhumane and can seriously harm your relationship with your pet as well as the dog’s emotional development and wellbeing. If your pooch truly won’t stop the chasing behavior, consider getting an expert trainer to assist you.

Keep in mind, if Fido chases cars, animals, or people, it may just be a bit annoying right now, but it can lead to serious injury and other problems for your pet. Stop dog chasing as quickly as possible in order to protect them in the future.

When it comes to dog health problems, there are many potential conditions that can affect your pet’s health.  The results could be both psychologically devastating as well as expensive when they are not handled quickly and effectively.  Rather than responding to possible health problems once your pooch already has them, discover what you can do to prevent them to begin with in order to keep your pet happy, healthy, and safe.

Common Dog Health Problems

Dogs can are afflicted by any number of medical issues, the same as people.  The difference is the fact that dogs can’t tell you when their tummy hurts or their hip seems out of whack.  They will suffer silently until the problem becomes a much bigger issue.  Therefore, it’s important to identify the signs and symptoms and the measures you can take to avoid these problems in the first place.

  • Joint disease and Dysplasia — Some dog are extremely susceptible to hip and joint problems.  Many pure bred dogs are more susceptible to arthritic dog health problems and hip dysplasia as their joints are generally a bit longer and narrower than mixed breed dogs.  Make sure your pet receives the required vitamins and minerals each day and that your vet checks out your dog’s joints for deterioration at least once a year if you have a pure bred pooch.
  • Allergies — Dogs may suffer from numerous forms of allergic reactions.  By far the most typical is a flea allergic reaction that can cause hot spots on their skin and can even lead to bacterial infections.  Make sure you get flea medicine for your pet every month.  Also bring them to the vet for regular health check-ups.  Skin issues may be due to a bacterial infection or a food hypersensitivity, both of which need to be discussed with your vet.
  • Infections — Dogs may suffer from numerous bacterial infections, not just on their skin but also in the mouth, eyes, or in their ears.  Ear infections are the most typical and are frequently due to a foreign body or bacteria getting in there.  Look at your dog’s ears often to check for dirt, excessive dampness, inflammation, or red-colored spots.  Of all dog health problems, bacterial infections are the simplest to prevent.  Thoroughly clean your dog’s eyes, ears, and teeth regularly, (with pet-safe products) and brush them frequently to help keep their coat and skin healthy.
  • Obesity – Obesity is among the most common as well as deadly dog health problems and it is directly brought on by eating too much and not exercising sufficient amounts.  Obesity by itself doesn’t lead to death, but it does increase the rates of liver disease, skin problems, tumors, and heart conditions.  Weight problems can be treated quite simply with a careful diet plan and by ensuring your pooch is getting enough exercise.
  • Diabetes — Dog health problems tend to reflection human problems in many ways as well as diabetes is one such possible disease.  Food high in sugar and fat can lead to the pancreatic issues that trigger diabetes.  To prevent diabetes, keep the dog on the strict diet plan of high quality dog food with little or no table scraps or other food not intended for dogs.  If your canine is diagnosed with diabetic issues, you’ll need to see the vet frequently and may have to administer shots.

Thankfully, as long as your pet receives adequate amounts of physical exercise, has a healthy diet, and is well groomed, you can avoid the majority of major dog health problems.

bull terrier trainingProper Bull Terrier Training is important because this specific breed needs a lot of structure in its life. The bull terrier is a high-energy dog that will make a good family member with the proper socialization, and training. However, they may be a little too rambunctious for families with very small children so this must be taken into consideration for families considering the Bull Terrier.

Positive Reinforcement

Your Bull Terrier will need a firm hand during training but this doesn’t mean causing physical pain or yelling at the dog. A firm hand can be presented to your dog through positive enforcement but using praise and edible treats.

Temperament

Even though Bull Terriers were once recognized as intense fighters, they are a significantly gentler breed these days. Bull Terriers may act as a deterrent to any potential criminals based purely on their reputation, and they will generally protect their owner if needed.  They can be trained as guard dogs but are better suited as companion dogs.

Bull terriers are courageous yet fun-loving dogs.  They tend to be very loyal and become very connected to their owners. Because of this, Bull Terrier Training needs to be firm and consistent and tempered with affection and strong alpha leadership. Bull Terriers are very active and generally do much better in households where they receive a lot of attention, supervision and companionship.  If you need to leave your Bull Terrier alone for long periods of time each day, consider having someone check in on them and walk them while you are gone.  If left alone for prolonged periods of time frequently, they can suffer separation anxiety and behavioral issues.

Socialization and Leadership

Bull Terriers can be fantastic family pets when extensively socialized at a young age and trained properly.  If you do not have time and energy to devote to training and socialization, they are potentially not the best fit for your family. Although they can get along with people of all ages, they can seem a bit aggressive with small children.  Children need to be taught how to exert leadership over the dog in order to prevent the dog from trying to take the leadership role.  Timid folks may discover they dog to be extremely protective, stubborn, controlling and even jealous if they fail to establish themselves as the alpha leader in the relationship early on.

In the absence of proper socialization, they may be aggressive with other dogs and small animals.  They need to be introduced to any other animals in the household while they are still puppies.  Male dogs generally don’t get along with other male dogs.

Health and Wellness

Bull Terriers need plenty of physical as well as mental exercise.   All puppies need to be examined for deafness.  Twenty percent of pure white dogs and just over 1% of colored Bull Terriers are deaf.  Bull Terriers are prone to skin allergies and should be taken to a veterinarian if they show signs of itching, hives, or a rash.

With a firm hand and a loving heart, Bull Terrier Training will be rewarding for both the trainer and the Bull Terrier.

Size Doesn’t Matter When It Comes to Pomeranian Traininghttp://www.dogtrainingpage.com/pomeranian-training/ http://www.dogtrainingpage.com/pomeranian-training/#comments Wed, 02 Mar 2011 20:46:30 +0000 admin http://www.dogtrainingpage.com

pomeranian trainingThe key to Pomeranian Training is to understand what makes this adorable breed unique. While a small breed of dog, Pomeranians have big personalities.  Small and precocious, Pomeranians love their owners and can be possessive and have separations anxiety. These are two of many reasons that training your Pomeranian is so important.

Click Here For an Expert Advice on Dog Obedience Training

The Basics

Pomeranians need a firm but loving hand during training.  Lots of praise and some edible treats should be enough to get the ball rolling.

Pomeranians have a lot of energy so when training your dog; try to eliminate any possible distractions. Show your dog an edible treat before you begin and start verbalizing the first command. When your dog accomplishes the command successfully, praise the dog and give the dog the edible treat.

Don’t try to train your dog on more than one command at a time. Training your dog one command at a time will speed up the time it takes to train your Pomeranian rather than slow it down as it reduces confusion. Never scold your Pomeranian during training. By using only positive reinforcement, you will create a positive learning experience for your dog and a strong, trusting bond.

Barking

Barking can become an issue with Pom Poms and should be addressed with Pomeranian training while they are still puppies if possible.  Poms will generally vocalize when presented with new stimuli such as new animals, people, or sounds.  They will also often bark if they feel any threat to their owners, as they are very protective and strongly bonded with their families.

Crating

If you are crate training a Pomeranian, keep in mind that size really does matter when choosing a crate, kennel or travel container. Your Pomeranian must be able to stand up and turn around when housed in the crate, but should not be able to walk, jump, or play.  If your Pom has extra space in their crate, they will be more likely to go potty in the crate because they have room enough to still lie down.

Environment

Because of their small size, Pomeranians can be great in apartments.  They will be very active indoors and tend to love playing with their owners and toys.  In warm weather, they will often seek out cooler places to lie down, such as a tile floor.  Since Poms are companion dogs and they form such strong bonds to their owners, they should generally not be left outdoors on their own.  They will likely suffer separation anxiety in such an environment, which can lead to behavioral problems including excessive barking.

Intelligence

Despite what many people believe, Pom Poms are quite intelligent.  They often use that intelligence to manipulate the people in their lives into giving them exactly what they want.  As super cute as they are, it’s important that you lay down the law with your Pom while they are still a puppy.  Establish yourself as the Alpha Dog in your relationship with your pooch early on to avoid behavioral problems in the future.

Pomeranians are generally a sturdy breed and have few health problems.  They have an average life expectancy of 12-16 years. While basic training may take just a few months, Pomeranian training can continue for its entire lifespan as old dogs can learn new tricks, and your Pom Pom is sure to enjoy any and all time they can spend with you.

Rhodesian Ridgeback TrainingRhodesian Ridgeback Training is not actually as hard as training lions, however this dog was bred originally to track lions and hold them at bay until hunters could put the lion down at close range.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Temperament

Being a strong and independent breed, the Rhodesian Ridgeback needs a strong, firm owner. Rhodesian Ridgebacks may not be for the first time dog owner but with the right owner, socialization, and training, they will be loyal member of the family.

Despite their strong and independent nature, Training a Rhodesian Ridgeback is very similar to the training of other breeds. Be firm but being firm never means striking or yelling at your dog, as this is counterproductive.

The Basics

Train your dog in an area free from distractions using praise and edible treats.  Show your dog the treat before starting and then train on the command. Train only one command at a time. When the dog successfully completes what it is being taught, surrender the treat and give praise. Keep in mind that the first command taught should be a return command.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Training Specifics

Rhodesian Ridgebacks tend to be devoted and clever. They may be, nevertheless, a bit aloof when it comes to strangers. Their aloofness should not be seen as aggression.  A Ridgeback of will be more likely to disregard, as opposed to challenge, strangers. This particular breed needs positive, reward-based instruction, great socialization and consistency.  Ridgebacks are generally not the best option for a novice dog owner. They tend to be strong-willed, and very smart which often gives them an inclination for mischief. They are usually protective of their owners and can be trained as guard dogs.

Sensitivity

In spite of the Ridgeback’s athletic build and aloofness, they also have a sensitive side. Excessively severe training techniques, that may be accepted by a working or sporting breed, will more than likely not work with a Ridgeback and can damage your relationship with your pooch. These dogs will take correction provided that it is reasonable and warranted and as long as it is from an individual they know and trust.

Health

The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals ranks the Rhodesian Ridgeback sixth when it comes to breeds most commonly affected by thyroid issues such as hypothyroidism.  They may also suffer from hip dysplasia or dermoid sinus.  Ridgebacks also sometimes suffer from a breed-specific form of deafness.  They have an average life span of just over 10 years, and can be a loyal, loving addition to most any family as long as they are trained properly.

Hunting

While you may not be planning to take your Ridgeback out lion hunting, they are actually very clever gun dogs and sometimes even classified as scenthounds or sighthounds.  If you are planning to use your Rhodesian Ridgeback as a hunting dog, be certain to cover related training with them prior to taking them out in the field.

Whether your pooch is going to accompany you on hunting trips or stay at home as a companion dog, proper training can save you a lot of time and headaches in the future.  Rhodesian Ridgeback Training isn’t so much a lion of a job but an act of love and patience.

Shiba Scream

Other than their intelligence and fastidious grooming, the Shiba Inu is also known for its vocalization. When they are excited by either positive or negative circumstances, they will “scream” a very loud, high-pitched noise. This can happen if they are upset by your training methods or if they are just excited that you’ve come home after a long day of work. Be prepared and recognize the Shiba scream as part of this breed’s uniqueness. You can discourage the scream by trying to avoid startling or exciting your pooch too much.

Separation Anxiety

Because the Shiba Inu bond closely with their owners, they may experience some separation anxiety while you are away from home. They may exhibit behaviors such as excessive barking, digging, or the destruction of your home and property. Don’t worry! Separation anxiety is avoidable with proper training and you can even help reduce how often your Shiba Inu “screams” by training them properly.

It takes a strong hand, but successful Shiba Inu training is entirely possible.

Golden Retreiver Puppy Training Golden Retriever puppy training will be comparatively easy. The Golden is an intelligent dog that rates very highly in trainability and obedience training.

History

While the Golden Retriever was originally bred as a hunting dog, it is a very good family pet. The breed is intelligent, fun loving, patient and quick to learn. This breed is patient with children, loving and loyal to its’ owners and also friendly to strangers. Their general lack of aggression and love of people does not make them a good choice as a guard dog.

The Basics

Training should be comparatively easy compared to some other breeds, as this breed is intelligent and eager to please. However, it will still take time and patience.

Using positive reinforcement methods only, take your puppy to a place in which you have removed most distractions. Train your dog on only one command at a time to reduce confusion. Briefly show the puppy an edible treat and vocalize the command in a clear voice. You will have to repeat this command and assist the dog in what it is supposed to do when it hears the command. When the dog completes the task successfully, give praise and an edible treat. Edible treats will no longer be necessary once the dog can regularly complete the task asked of it.

Temperament

The personality of Golden Retrievers is really a highlight of this breed and can be summed up as kind, confident, and friendly and confident. Far from being “single person dogs,” they are typically just as friendly with and comfortable around both their family and strangers. Because they are so trusting and gentle, they typically do not make good guard dogs.  Typically, Golden Retrievers are intelligent, calm, and extremely eager to please their masters, which makes them a real delight to train.

Exercise and Swimming

Most Golden Retrievers have high energy levels and will need lots of daily exercise.  They can also excel at dog agility, which is great for challenging them both physically and mentally.  Because they have been bred as hunting dog specifically able to retrieve birds from water, they are generally great swimmers.  Unlike some other breeds, Goldens generally love the water and are well suited for not only swimming but boating as well.

Obedience and Intelligence

Golden Retrievers are noteworthy because of their high intelligence, and they rank fourth on Stanley Coren’s “The Intelligence of Dogs” list, behind Border Collies, Poodles, and German Shepherds.  They are one of the top rated dogs when it comes to obedience and trainability. When it comes to Golden Retriever Puppy training, obedience training should be very easy compared to other breeds.

Goldens and Children

Goldens are also well-known for their patience with and tolerance of children and therefore make great family companion dogs.  They will also generally tolerate other dogs and animals in the household, but they should be socialized while they are still puppies if possible to minimize their hunting instinct.

Golden Retriever puppy training with positive reinforcement will assist you and your dog in having a long and happy relationship together.

bull mastiff trainingSome may think that Bull Mastiff Training would be difficult as the breed is a large dog mainly bred for hunting and protection. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The Bull Mastiff if socialized properly, is a friendly, loyal, family loving dog that also can be trained to share space with other pets, including cats and smaller dogs, and will learn quickly.

Click Here For an Expert Advice on Dog Obedience Training

Temperament

The Bull Mastiff is a loyal, obedient and docile dog that is courageous and loyal to its family. The Bull Mastiff is an independent dog that may like to make its own decisions on what to do but can easily be trained to look to its owner to make those decisions instead. You absolutely need to establish yourself as the “Alpha Dog” in the relationship while your pooch is still a puppy.

Commands

From the moment you first receive your Bull Mastiff, you will want to familiarize it with its name. The next command you will want to train it to answer to will be a return command such as “here”, “come”, “return.” As long as you have already established yourself as the “boss” in your relationship with your pooch, and you follow basic training guidelines, training your Bull Mastiff should go smoothly. Command training is key to keeping your extremely large pup under control. These and other commands can be trained very easily using the following basic training method.

Bull Mastiff Training Basics

Start your training in an area where you can remove most distractions. Train on one command at a time to avoid confusion. Show your dog and edible treat. Verbalize the command in a clear and concise voice and show your dog how to accomplish the command. When your dog completes the action successfully, reward the dog with a treat and praise. Do not scold your dog during training as this will slow your training and cause your dog to fear the owner. Instead, always use positive reinforcement when training.

Socialization

While they do not have as strong of a prey instinct as some other dog breeds, Bull Mastiffs should still be supervised with small children and other pets. Because of their size, they have a tendency for knocking things, (and children) down accidentally, which can be very frightening to a child or smaller pet. These spectacular dogs need to be socialized with people and other pets while they are puppies to help ensure they behave properly as adults. Even when properly socialized, male Bull Mastiffs can be aggressive toward other male dogs.

Health

The typical lifespan of a Bull Mastiff is 8-10 years. They are prone to a few health issues including, most frequently, hip dysplasia. Likewise, they may suffer from elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism, or other health issues and should be taken to a veterinarian for regular check-ups.

Environment

Despite their size, Bull Mastiffs are generally not happy if left outside all of the time. They bond intensely with their family and generally enjoy being around people. If left in a cage, or outdoor pen, they are likely to break down your fencing just to find someone to pay attention to them.
Mastiffs require only moderate exercise. Unlike many other dog breeds, getting a Mastiff to go for a walk may be a bit of a challenge. But walking them regularly should be done in order to maintain their health.

Hopefully these tips will make your Bull Mastiff Training a rewarding and fun experience for both you and your pet.

potty train a yorkieYorkie potty training can be easy and simple if the owner is prepared, consistent, patient and educated about the new addition to their home. Yorkies are very intelligent but you must remember if your Yorkie is still a puppy, it is like having a child in the house. Accidents will happen and the more prepared you are to deal with the accidents and mitigate the number of them, the easier the training will be.

While there are several different methods you can use to potty train your Yorkie, the two most popular are paper training and crating.

How to Potty Train Your Yorkie

How to Potty Train a Yorkie: Paper Training

Paper training involves the use of newspaper or puppy pads placed on the floor in an area of the home where the owner would like the puppy to learn to relieve itself. This area should be free of items that may harm your dog, and most preferably on a hard surface that is not carpeted.

Guide your dog to this area of the house at times in which the dog is most likely going to need to eliminate. Praise the dog when it uses the paper or pads and remember not to scold the dog when there are accidents.

Gradually you may want to move the papers ever closer to the door, which will be used to take the dog into the yard. Eventually the papers will move out the door and disappear. Prior to this however, start taking your terrier out into the yard at times when it appears they need to eliminate. Put some soiled pads or paper in the yard for scent. Before you know it, your Yorkie potty training is complete and they are vocalizing their need to go outside to go potty.

Crating

Crating involved the use of a crate, kennel or carrier to potty train your Yorkie. When purchasing the crate, ensure that it is large enough for your dog to stand up and turn around while inside. Use a comfortable and easy to clean bedding for the interior. You start crate training your dog when it has reached 9 weeks old.
Start crate training by introducing the crate to your terrier with treats.

Rather than forcing the dog into the crate, use treats and games of hide and seek to entice the dog to enter the crate. Initially, do not close the door to the crate but eventually after the dog has learned to enter and exit on it’s own, close the door for short periods of time.

Create a schedule revolving around your terrier’s potty schedule to take the dog out to eliminate. Since terriers are naturally inclined to avoid soiling their own bedding, your terrier will soon learn to vocalize their desire to be let out of the crate to eliminate.

Whether you decide to use the newspaper or crate method, remember to be patient, firm, consistent and full of praise when your terrier accomplishes a task successfully. Use treats at first to encourage your dog, which then can be replaced by loving praises from their owner or trainer.

With these simple guidelines, Yorkie potty training can be easy and even fun.

Great Dane Training: Taming the Gentle Gianthttp://www.dogtrainingpage.com/great-dane-training/ http://www.dogtrainingpage.com/great-dane-training/#comments Mon, 27 Dec 2010 13:15:09 +0000 admin http://www.dogtrainingpage.com

Great Dane Training is a bit different than training other breeds. Great Danes are one of the largest of the dog breeds and, not surprisingly, year after year the world’s largest dog is usually a Great Dane. Despite its size, the Great Dane is considered a gentle, even sensitive dog, and is generally a loyal family member, and normally behaves without aggression with other family pets.

As with any dog that is new to the home, the owner will want to start training their Great Dane as soon as possible. Due to its enormous size and fast growth, some owners might find it a more urgent task than with smaller breeds.

Click Here to Find Out How You Can Have a Healthy, Happy and Obedient Great Dane

Patience and consistency are two of the most important character traits the owner will need to display when training their Great Dane. A short temper will only elongate the time period it takes to train your dog. Positive reinforcement and healthy, dog treats are the best tools to use when training your Great Dane.

When training your Great Dane, place him in an environment in which you have removed most distractions, including other pets. Train the dog on one command at a time so as not to confuse the dog and after the dog knows its name the next command will be a return command such as “return”, “come”, or “here”. When the dog completes the task successfully, reward with an edible treat and praise.

Great Dane Training Can Be Broken Down Into Some Simple Steps

  • Socialization – Because of their size and development rate, it is crucial that you socialize your Great Dane earlier than with other breeds. Socialization should start at 2-3 months of age and continue until adulthood.
  • Positive Reinforcement and Clicker Training – Postive reinforcement training techniques such as clicker training often work best with this large breed. Dogs should never be physically punished or abused, and a Great Dane should be especially handled with care because of their size.
  • Sensitivity – Despite their size, Great Dane are actually fairly sensitive. They enjoy pleasing their owners and can become upset and anxious if they feel they’re failed to do so. Keep things positive and upbeat and never yell at your pooch. Yelling, (as well as physical punishment) can cause emotional as well as behavioral issues and can damage your relationship with your pet.

Great Dane

Along with the basics for training Great Danes, you will also need to potty train your pooch. If your new pet is still a puppy, basic potty  training techniquesshould suffice. If you have brought an adult Great Dane into your family, you will still need to do a potty training refresher course with them. Any time a dog is moved into a new environment, they will need to be taught where they can, (and where they can’t) go potty. Older dogs should catch on quickly and puppies are generally potty trained in a week or so.

Great Dane Training is an ongoing process for both you and your pooch, but the rewards of having a loyal, loving pet are well worth the effort.

Finding the best puppy training book or training program is crucial to your dog’s development and health. Taking good care of a puppy is usually a lot of fun for your entire household. However, at the same time, training a puppy can really be plenty of hard work. Of course playing with and cuddling with a puppy is great fun and even relaxing.

But you really need to keep in mind that your puppy, as adorable as he or she is now, will grow up very quickly. And as they grow up, they are going to need a bit of direction and guidance from you.

Responsibility

More than just loving, feeding, and playing with your pooch, you are also going to need to devote time and energy to bathe, walk, and train them. These may not seem like exciting or fun parts of puppy and dog ownership, but they are absolutely necessary. Bringing a dog into your life and the lives of your family members is a big responsibility, but with proper training information, you’ll be off to a great start with your new pet.

Bringing a new puppy into your home will require everyone in the household to participate in caring for its needs. By involving your entire family or household, your puppy won’t just learn to love your family unconditionally, but they will also learn to be a well-behaved, active, and healthy adult dog throughout their lives.

To do this, you will need to put one member of your household in charge of training your puppy once they are 2-4 months old. You will also need to find proper dog training information.

Avoid Mistakes

Sadly, a lot of pet owners do not know how to properly train their puppies. Some folks punish their dogs for “bad behavior” and other people spoil their pets. Both ends of the spectrum can create a variety of different behavioral and emotional issues for your pet once they are older. In order to avoid making these and other mistakes, you can use a puppy training book or online training course as a guide for training your new pet.

Puppies are living, breathing animals and they deserve to be cared for and trained properly so that they can grow up well-behaved and healthy. Although puppies may be challenging sometimes, (particularly when they are naughty), proper training can help prevent a lot of puppy problems.

Books and Training Programs

Bookstores and even many online websites offer a large variety of different puppy training books. You can find training information specific to your pup’s breed or general books about training puppies. There are books from professional trainers about many different training methods and approaches and there are also books written from dog lovers around the world.
Whichever training program or book you decide to go with, just remember that dog training is a life long event and doesn’t have to stop when your dog has reached maturity.

Training your puppy will not be as daunting as you may think. With a little patience, and education, both you and your puppy will have a fun and rewarding experience. A puppy training book is a valuable tool in raising and training the new canine member of your family.

Rottweiler Training Rottweiler training is not as difficult as many people believe.  A much-maligned breed, the Rottweiler is not the monster that is sometimes portrayed in movies. Rather than a monster, the Rottweiler is a loving, loyal, and intelligent breed, which can become a valued member of your family.

History

Rottweilers are working dogs, bred to herd cattle, guard property, and have also been used as police dogs as well as messenger and ambulance dogs during the First World War. Very intelligent, the dog is easy to train for the owner who can be firm, loving and consistent.

Socialization

Since the Rottweiler is very protective of his family and property, aggressive socialization is important. Socialization with other animals, family members, and children should begin as soon as you acquire the dog.

The Basics

Dog training can begin at a very young age. Start by naming your dog as soon as it is brought home.  Name recognition is very important and the dog will pick up on it very quickly.

When more structured training begins, do so in an area in which there are few to no distractions.  To avoid confusion, train your Rottweiler on only one command at a time. Start by showing the dog an edible treat and then saying the in a clear and concise voice, the command.  At first, you will have to continually repeat the command and show the dog what is expected. Once the dog has shown it has learned the command, surrender the treat to the dog and give it verbal praise.  This same training method is repeated for each new command. Eventually, treats will not be needed anymore when the dog consistently responds to the command.

Temperament

Rottweiler TrainingOne of the most important parts of Rottweiler training is to understand and appreciate their unique temperament.  The Rottweiler is actually quite good-natured and placid in their basic disposition.  They are very devoted, obedient dogs and are generally quite happy as work or companion dogs. Rotts are a steady, self-assured, alert and fearless breed.  Generally calm and confident, some people find that Rotts are a bit aloof when it comes to strangers.  Although they bond fairly strongly with their owner and family, they generally do not immediately make friendships with strangers.  They will likely take a wait-and-see stance around new people and in new environments.

Socialization and Obedience Training

  • Rottweilers are an extremely powerful breed with strong guard and herding instincts. As with any breed, (especially strong, highly intelligent ones), the main issues people experience with Rottweilers are typically the result of irresponsible owners more so than the dogs themselves.  Unfortunately Rotts have been the subjects of abuse and neglect in recent decades which can cause them to be more aggressive than their actual nature.
  • With proper socialization and obedience training, Rottweilers are no more aggressive that other breeds similar in power and intelligence.  They can be territorial and very protective of their owners and home but will generally warm up to strangers if they are properly introduced by a family member or someone they trust.

Health

Rottweilers are generally a very hardy, healthy, and disease-free breed. As with many larger dog breeds, hip dysplasia can potentially become a problem and all breeding stock should have their hips and elbows x-rayed and checked by a veterinarian.

Though they are a strong, independent breed, Rottweiler training will not difficult as long as you have the right information.

online puppy training Thousands of websites now offer online puppy training information for a variety of different breeds and training circumstances. As most readers have already realized before reading this article, the Internet can be a valuable source for training information, but it can be difficult to locate exactly what you’re looking for on the many sites available.

Types of Training Information

When trying to locate a site to provide you with the puppy training information you need, consider the different types of information available and which you would prefer.  Some of the formats you may encounter include online articles, training manual eBooks, videos, audio files, and actual physical books you can order.

Click Here For an Expert Advice on Puppy and Dog Training

Budget

With online puppy training information, it’s also important to take into account your budget.  Many sites offer free training information but the majority of expert and professional dog training methods are available as eBooks, and training videos for a fraction of the cost of private dog training classes and piles of training books.

Breed Specific

When searching for the best puppy training strategies, you will also need to determine if you need breed specific information or general training tips.  Many dog breeds have training specific challenges and the best puppy training sites will offer you information for your specific breed of dog.

Proven Results

Like many internet resources, it may be difficult to determine the source of dog training information on some websites.  Unless the site lists a specific author and their credentials, you can never really be sure who is supplying the information.  Therefore, the best way to ensure that you are getting quality info is to check the site for feedback from actual customers.  Many sites will offer the comments and feedback they receive from their customers.  If this information is missing from a site, you can try contacting them to request customer testimonials, but keep in mind that if they have positive responses to their information, they will likely already make that available on the site.  If that information is not readily available, you can likely assume the feedback they get is less than positive.

Clear and Concise

Whatever format of training information you decide upon, it is also important that all training materials are clear and concise.  There’s nothing more annoying than searching for something online and reading through several sites online to find hard-to-follow, incomplete, or over-written information.  Look for step-by-step directions that cover all the things you need to know without lots of filler and fluff just to fill up the page.

Different Methods

  • The training method or program you eventually decide upon should not only cater to your specific dog breed’s needs but also your own personality type. If you have a timid personality, a program that breaks down specifically how to establish yourself as the alpha dog in your relationship with your pooch may be required to help you establish control.
  • Finding quality, inexpensive dog training information and advice online does not have to be a headache.  Sorting through thousands of sites is a lot easier than you think as long as you keep in mind what you’re looking for and the quality of the information you encounter.  Online puppy training can help you and your pet get off to a great start.

As the proud new owner of a Boxer, you will find that Boxer training is relatively easy. This breed is an intelligent, fun loving family dog. This breed is normally good with children and other pets with the exception of some male dogs. These males have not been neutered and may become aggressive to other male dogs.

Boxer Training – The Basics

When you pick up your new puppy, have a name in mind with which to familiarize your dog. Teaching your dog to respond to its name is the first step in your dogs training program. When structured training begins, bring a positive attitude and some edible treats. Positive reinforcement means that only praise and treats are used to train the dog. Fear, and physical pain should never be used when training your boxer.

Training Environment

Take your dog to someplace either inside or outside the home where there are little to no distractions. Show your dog a treat and vocalize the command in a clear and concise voice. Repeat the command and show the dog what you are looking for it to accomplish when you give the command. When your dog completes the task successfully, surrender the treat and give the dog praise.

Temperament

Boxers are an intelligent, dynamic and fun breed and they are usually excellent with children. They’re energetic and extremely powerful dogs which demand sufficient physical and mental exercise in order to prevent boredom-related behaviors like chewing and digging.

Positive Reinforcement

  • Boxers have acquired a reputation for being a bit headstrong, which is often linked to improper Boxer training. Due to their particular intelligence and strength, training based upon corrections is generally not well suited for this breed. Boxers generally respond much better to positive reinforcement strategies like clicker training. Be aware that Boxers can actually be resistant to punishment-based or repetitive training techniques and avoid them whenever possible. Skilled dog trainers who make use of reward-based, positive reinforcement techniques will discover that Boxers are intelligent and hard working.

Socialization

  • The Boxer dog is not, by nature, aggressive or vicious however, if they are provoked they can be a powerful protector of their owner or home. They enjoy the companionship of both people and other dogs but should be socialized as early as possible. Boxers are usually tolerant of puppies and smaller dogs, but once they have themselves reached maturity, they may be aggressive toward other adult dogs, especially adult dogs of the same gender. Female boxers generally do not get along with other adult female boxers, and male boxers may be aggressive toward other adult male dogs.

Boxers Health

  • Boxers may suffer from a variety of health issues including but not limited to cancer and heart conditions such as “Boxer Cardiomyopathy,” and Aortic Stenosis. They are also susceptible to hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and hypothyroidism. Boxers which have white coloration over 1/3 or more of their bodies are considered white boxers and are genetically predisposed to deafness in one or both ears. White boxers should not be bred and are generally disqualified from show.

While you will find that every Boxer is different, once you have trained your boxer you will see that in general, Boxer training is relatively easy and stress free.

Stop Dog Aggression Before learning how to stop dog aggression, you must first identify what is the trigger of this aggression.

Often the problem lies in their genetic makeup, due to the fact that they are descendents of wolves, therefore aggression is a primal instinct.

To be successful in stopping dog aggression, you must first acknowledge that these wolf-like dogs therefore instinctively fight over food, and defend their territories, just like in the wild.

Although aggressive behaviors in most breeds has been bred out, you must still be vigilant in how to stop dog aggression. Rottweilers, for example, notoriously attack and defend their territory instinctively.

Aggression Once and For All!

The only way how to stop dog aggression is through training methods that curb aggression, and lower its level of occurence to an acceptable level.

Quite often, prevention is better than cure, in working out how to stop dog aggression. If, for example, you have several friends coming over to visit, it would be safer to tie up your dog, in order that the dog feels involved in proceedings, but their movement is restricted. In implementing this strategy of how to stop dog aggression, they will be part of the social occasion, while understanding violence and aggression is not tolerated.

  • Other owners choose to either neuter or spay their dog, as de-sexing has proven to be a reliable solution as to how to stop dog aggression. Without de-sexing, hormonal instincts will prevail. Please note that de-sexing is not a quick solution as to how to stop dog aggression. Sometimes spaying and neutering serves no obvious effect in reducing dog aggression whatsoever.
  • Incorporating the equivalent of a “timeout” is a good way how to stop dog aggression. If your dog does not respond to other methods, you should look at a timeout in a room on their own, and have no contact or attention for the next 10 minutes. This is a great way how to stop dog aggression, as dogs hate isolation, because it means they are in the lower order of the pack. With their ancestors, an overly-aggressive pack member would be banished to learn a lesson.
  • Muzzling of an aggressive dog is another technique for stopping dog aggression. Any animal which acts aggressively to the general public, or to friends and guests, should be considered for wearing a muzzle. Whilst you should consider this to be a last resort, if your dog is unpredictable and spontaneous in its actions, this may be the only option available to you for how to control dog aggression quickly.
  • It goes without saying, you should never actively encourage the dog to participate in any aggressive activities such as wrestling, tug-of-war, biting a padded hand, or dog fighting in general. All of these activities encourage the dog to try to win or dominate their opponents. Unfortunately, this is the way territorial and protection aggressive behavior begins in the first place.

9 Easy Tips to Stop Dog Aggression

Learning to stop dog aggression can be a frustrating endeavor when you’re not sure where to begin. The following step-by-step tips should help.

  • Medical Check-up – It is not likely, however occasionally a dog aggression problem can be linked to the animal’s overall health. If the dog seems at all sick, you need to take your pet to a veterinarian in order to eliminate the possibility of health related aggression.
  • Assume the Alpha Position – Often, aggression in dogs is their effort to control their “pack,” (your family and other pets in the household). Even if the dog is not trying to assume the alpha position in your home, establishing a specific pack leader will make obedience and other training faster and easier for you both, which can also help stop dog aggression.
  • Change your Feeding Routine – For those who have other dogs, cats, or animals in their household, stopping dog aggression may be as simple as changing how you feed your pets. Many dogs become aggressive over the food dish. The best way to stop this type of behavior is to feed the aggressive dog in a different room from other pets.
  • Dog Obedience Training – Hand in hand with establishing yourself as the Alpha Dog and pack leader, dog obedience training is also a quick way to get your pooch respecting you as the boss and following your commands. Obedience training on its own is often enough to stop dog aggression.
  • Plenty of Healthy food and Exercise – Keep your doggy properly exercised and give them healthy, nourishing food. Although poor nutrition caused by giving your dog low quality dog food doesn’t directly cause dog aggression, a deficiency of nutritional requirements can certainly aggravate it.
  • Keep your pet mentally stimulated – Various dogs, especially highly intelligent breeds, have a tendency to become aggressive when they lack enough things to challenge them not just physically but mentally as well. Anxiety, boredom and other emotional problems cause by boredom can all cause aggression in dogs. Be sure you are giving your dog plenty of attention as well as toys and challenging games to play.
  • Minimize Fear – Fear can be quite a powerful motivator for aggression in dogs too. To reduce fear in your pet’s life, do not ever use negative punishment. It is never ok to hit, spank, or otherwise physically or verbally abuse a dog. Abuse often leads to dog aggression and it can also significantly damage your relationship with your pet. Correct unwanted behaviors as an alternative to punishing them. It’s also important not to reinforce any fear they already have by giving them lots of attention when they’re upset. That will only serve to cause more of the behavior.
  • Stay away from Triggers – Once you discover what specifically sparks your dog’s aggressive behavior, the easiest method to stop dog aggression is to avoid the trigger. Your pet may not like to be around children or they may want to fight other dogs when they are on a leash. Obviously, it may always be possible to avoid whatever triggers your pooch, but making an attempt to keep them away from the negative stimuli whenever possible can help you minimize their aggressive behavior.
  • Call in a Professional – If the above techniques do not stop dog aggression, it may be time to call in an expert trainer. Dog aggression is a serious issue and if you are unable to control it, you need to seriously consider hiring a trainer right away. Aggression can lead to biting and other behaviors.

Alaskan Malamute Training may be a test of patience but this wonderful breed will be a welcome addition to your family.

Training the Alaskan Malamute maybe be a challenge, not because they are unintelligent dogs, but quite the opposite. This breed is a very intelligent breed but one which was bred to survive in harsh conditions.  Because of those conditions, they have evolved as very independent, strong breed in nature. This requires that the owner be firm, and that the dog is kept in a yard that is fenced in or on a lead, as they are known to wander away.

The Alaskan Malamute was bread for cold climate living but can be raised in warm climates as well as long as proper precautions are taken.  When the temperature is hot outside, keep the dog inside in proper temperature and take the dog out to eliminate. Exercise the dog in the cooler evenings and use a small kiddy pool to help keep the dog cool during the day.

The Basics

  • To begin your training sessions, take your dog to your area with few distractions. Remove other pets from the area and ask other family members to give move to another room or part of the yard. Use edible treats and praise to train your dog. Show the dog the treat before training and then when the dog completes the task successfully, give it the treat and praise.
  • Don’t confuse the dog by training it on more than one command at a time. By training on one command at a time, the training will actually move at a faster pace. And remember that an Alaskan Malamute will most likely not follow ever command one hundred percent of the time due to their independent streak. Don’t let this ruin your experience, as this dog will be a loving member of your family nonetheless.

Potty Training

Potty training is an important part of Alaskan malamute training, as it is with any dog training. Again, do not scold the dog during training. When accidents happen, a firm “no” is all that is needed along with redirection. Keep in mind that even if your pooch is an adult dog, you will still need to do some basic potty training with them when you bring them into your home or any new environment.

Prey Instinct and Socialization

Alaskan Malamutes were once cross-bred with wolves, because of this, (and  other evolutionary conditions), they have a very strong prey instinct.  They should be socialized with adults, children, and other animals while they are still puppies.  Even when they have been properly socialized, their prey instinct is so strong that they should always be carefully supervised with small children and other animals, including other dogs.

Alaskan Malamute training will be a rewarding experience for both the owner and the dog.

Golden Retriever TrainingGolden Retriever training must address several ironies of this playful Scottish wonder. Whilst they make brilliant household pets when they are older, your Golden Retriever training will be put to the test while they are still puppies.

For such a large dog, they have an exceptionally soft-gripping mouth.

While remembering that these beautiful golden monuments are man’s best friend, they were bred to retrieve downed waterfowl and game birds shot by hunters.

Golden Retriever Training For Breed Specific Issues

There are three distinct variations of a Golden Retriever which all require specific training. The American, British, and Canadian breeds, all possess mildly different mannerisms and traits. For you to develop an accurate Golden Retriever obedience training system, place of origin does play a factor. Additionally, the pedigree of your Golden Retriever will also govern how strong its traits are.

Golden Retrievers are equally happy to be with owners and strangers alike. In certain respects, an effective training regime must counteract this lack of loyalty. Puppies will be notoriously disloyal, and specific care must be taken at all levels of training to ensure respect and loyalty to the owner. The usual reward treats, combined with regular feeding times, will win this gentle giant over.

In respect to their health, your  Retriever training must include regular veterinary checkups. Cancer, in addition to hip and elbow dysplasia (dislocation) are quite common in the Golden Retriever genetic makeup. While not directly part of Golden Retriever obedience training, strict attention must be focused on the diet, and vitamin supplements, as well as veterinary advice to minimize these health risks.

Using Golden Retriever Training To Bring Out Their Best

The hallmark of your dog’s training, will be to bring out their kind, friendly, and confident nature. This trusting, gentle disposition, means that they make very poor guard dogs. On the flip side, they make brilliant family pets, gently playing with young children. These intensely intelligent creatures eventually perceive the household family as their family, and any good Golden Retriever training would direct attention to ensuring that the dog feels completely integrated into the family unit.

Socializing during training, exposing your crazy little bundle of joy to the outside world, will result in a much more alert and streetwise individual. Whilst highly intelligent, Retrievers notoriously lack the ability to distinguish between friend and foe. Socialization should take place between weeks 10 and week 16, mingling with a vast variety of other puppies, large dogs, and any other animals that you wish it not to attack. Whilst it does not attack per se, Golden Retrievers still have an inbred instinct to chase birds while they are stationary on the ground.

Golden Retriever Training Recommendations

Golden Retrievers are not born wonder dogs. They need time, effort, training, and lots of praise in order to blossom into the great dogs they can be. You will need a good sense of humor and a keen willingness to let the house get a bit messy. The best place to get your Golden Retriever, with a pleasant disposition, is directly from a registered breeder. I would not recommend getting a dog from the pet store.

dog separation anxiety training If your dog destroys your home or exhibits other negative behaviors while you are away, you may need to consider dog separation anxiety training.

A lot of dogs have problems with separation anxiety, particularly when they are puppies.

Dogs are extremely social animals that, before domestication, lived in packs in the wild. When your dog is separated from their pack, (you and your family), nervousness and even fear may occur.

Symptoms of Separation Anxiety in Dogs

If you pup whines incessantly, howls, or barks for long periods of time whenever you leave them alone, they may be experiencing anxiety issues. Other symptoms include destruction of your home and property such as sofas, shoes, and articles of clothing? Many dogs will try to be close to the things that smell most like their owners while they are away, which unfortunately means that your shoes, clothing, and upholstery may be in for some problems.

If your dog scratches at doors or windows, or the walls of their pen or crate, that is another good indication that they have separation anxiety. They are likely trying to get out of wherever they are in order to go find you and reunite themselves with the pack.

Causes of Dog Separation Anxiety

Many breeds of dogs bond very strongly with their owners. The most basic cause of separation anxiety is that they miss you while you’re away. Deeper than that, they have been pack dogs for thousands of years and often feel more comfortable in groups. Puppies especially also may have a distorted sense of time and, because they have less experience of your comings and goings, may start to worry if you will ever return home again.
Uncorrected anxiety issues can lead to larger problems once your puppy gets older, so it is crucial that you deal with their issues as quickly and correctly as possible.

Dog Separation Anxiety Cures

  • Attention – Every time you come back home, be careful not to immediately lavish your pooch with attention. In fact, ignore them completely for about 5 minutes.  Wait for them to calm down and then pet them calmly.  You can give them a treat at this time as well if you would like to, as long as they remain calm.  This will help your pet to associate your leaving with the positive outcome of attention and treats when you return home.
  • Exercise – Whenever possible, take your dog out for a walk or run before you leave home. This will help ensure that they are well exercised and that they will likely fall asleep after you leave rather than getting nervous and eating your new open-toed sandals. Also, don’t make a big deal out of leaving so that they remain as calm as possible.
  • Timing – Especially with younger puppies, changing the timing and amounts of time that you’re gone for can help minimize their anxiousness.  Leave for a few minutes at a time rather than 8 or more hours every time you leave. This will help keep your pooch from worrying that you will be gone for long periods of time every time you leave.

Dog Separation Anxiety Training
can start as soon as you recognize the symptoms and should last until your pet is cured.
